How Do I Use The Card?

The Amigo Travel Card is your best alternative to carrying cash, credit cards or travellers cheques when in Cuba.
After you have purchased the card [see Deposit Instructions] you need to specify the dollar amount that you want to have available for withdrawal and purchases.

Currently, we accept certified cheques, international money orders, cashier cheques and bank drafts payable in US funds only. At this time, we do not accept personal cheques. US funds are the currency of choice in Cuba especially within the tourism industry. When issuing a certified cheque and bank draft, your bank is your best bet to ensure you receive the best exchange rate for the amount you wish to deposit with us.

The money that you forward to us to apply to your Amigo Travel Card account is held in trust with CIBC Bank. It is your money at all times, and completely and only accessible by you when using your Amigo Travel Card. If your card is lost or stolen, your funds are made available through a new card that we issue to you or you can ask to have the remaining funds transferred back to you by us when you return from Cuba.

Use your Amigo Travel Card in the same manner you would use a debit card. Present your card when paying for purchases at any of the 6,000 participating locations across the island. To identify a participating merchant, look for the Amigo Travel Card sign or ask before you pay. To determine where you can use the card [see Where Can I Use The Card] for a map and list of locations by city. Your card is accepted by a variety of merchants including retail stores, supermarkets, drug stores, car rental agencies, entertainment venues, restaurants, car rental agencies, hotels and more. When using your card, you will be asked for ID to verify you are the true cardholder. Your Amigo Travel Card can only be used by you. If travelling in a group, ensure members of your group carry a card as well. Applications are available by clicking here [see How Do I Get A Card].

Purchasing Goods and Withdrawing Funds:
Shop at any location that displays and accepts the Amigo Travel Card™. Simply present your card and proper identification to the participating merchant. The merchant will enter the amount of the purchase and then request you to authorize the transaction by signing the receipt. Your card balance will be debited immediately by the amount of the purchase. If you need to withdraw cash at any time, simply visit a participating bank, currency exchange outlet (Cadeca) or postal office. You will be asked to present ID such as a passport.

As you use your card, the money that you deposited with us depletes in balance. To keep track of your purchases and balance, you can call into our IVR service while in Cuba at 204-4824. Or, you can call our customer service department at 905-660-5558 or toll free at 1-877-296-9724. Alternatively, you can log onto this website. You will need a user name and password and can request that information by calling customer service.

Fees:
There is a one time card fee of $20 US. All purchases are FREE and not subject to service charges. Cash withdrawals are subject to a fee of 1% of the purchase price and a service charge of $2.50 US is applied, regardless of amount withdrawn. Account maintenance fees are waived for six months from the date the card was issued and are subject to a $5 US monthly fee thereafter. Lost cards are replaced for $8 US and refunds on balances remaining upon return from Cuba are subject to a $10 US administration charge to be subtracted from the balance. If you have further questions about fees, please contact us at csr@amigotravelcard.com.
